Randale Summit was part of our larger OO Gauge layout ‘Lea Moor and Randale Summit’, which has now passed on. The branch is still available for exhibitions and measures 18’ x 3’6”.

Gordondale: This layout had a difficult birth, until Gordon Smith teamed up with Graham Ryder, who together took hold of it by the scruff of the neck and dragged it into a modern image setting. Unfortunately, a short time later Gordon died, and Graham teamed up with Mike Hansford to continue the good work, ably assisted by Gerry Bent. The layout is named in honour of Gordon.

The layout is expected to be ready for exhibiting early in 2009 and measures 12’ 6” x 7’6”.

The new EM gauge layout measures 15’ 6” x 3’ 6”
This layout is based around the loading screens of a coalmine, depicting the arrivals / holdings sidings. The empty wagons are pushed through the screens and into the fiddle yard from where they are returned to arrival sidings. The layout is built around two scenic boards from a previous layout, which helps to explain the shape. The group hope to scratch build the pithead, engine house, screens and sundry huts that abound around these sites.

Westleigh Junction:

This is a fictitious railway, proposed to relieve the Somerset & Dorset Railway due to overcrowding during the week and especially at Bank Holidays. When the S&D closed, the BB&SR continued to thrive as a through route for holiday and docks traffic, through to the present day.

The Birmingham, Bournemouth and Southampton Railway:

Three railway entrepreneurs got together and suggested a line to link Birmingham with Southampton docks and the holiday resorts of Devon and Cornwall. The idea was to relieve the S&D at busy times. The GWR, running from Birmingham, Westbury and Salisbury, the Southern from Bath, Shaftesbury and Bournemouth, and the LMS running to Southampton. During the two World wars, the route was heavily used by the military. When the S&D closed, traffic was transferred to the BB&SR and continues to this day. The layout is called Westleigh Junction, and lies midway between Westbury and Shaftesbury. It has engine sheds and converging lines from Bournemouth and Southampton.

When finished, this layout will be 32’ x 12’.

Test Track 1

Test Track 1 started life as a good idea to fill an empty wall space and is 22’ long by 16” wide, fixed to the wall. It was an opportunity to test ideas with the various manufacturers products. I made the baseboards from 1/4” ply and 2”x1” softwood frame, laid cork on top and then the Peco code 100 track was laid and ballasted.

Because we have a lot of members who like modern image, track with concrete sleepers was used. The platforms were made from block board, covered with Slaters Plasticard; Metcalf and Superquick card buildings were used to decorate the layout.

As members were busy with the big layout, I asked a friend of the club, Alan Palmer, of Broadway Models, to make two signal boxes and a bridge for us.

In the grand tradition, the layout will probably never be finished!
