The Nelson Trophy was introduced in 2007, to celebrate the life of one of our founder members, Graham John Nelson, who died on 11th July 2006.
The Trophy is given to the best layout at our exhibition as voted for by the general public. His wife Vera presented the Trophy in 2007, and hopefully will continue to do so for many years.
Graham went to Westleigh High School until 1957, when he left and started training as a draughtsman at BICC.
He joined BP as a junior engineer in October 1964, then in February 1967, took a post as assistant engineer at Newchurch Hospital. He later worked on commissioning power stations.
In February 1970, he rejoined BP as 4th engineer on the tankers, becoming Chief Engineer in November 1977.
In 1986 he left BP and sailed as engineer for Esso and various other companies. He retired in 2001 and took on the job of handyman at the care home where his wife Vera worked.
He was an active member of the club whenever he was ashore and turned his hand to all sorts of engineering projects within the club, helping to organise and install joists under the clubhouse and flooring the cellar space so it could be used for storage.
